Living in Victoria, Canada
1970's & 80's

Victoria in 1973 was a quaint and delightful place. In fact, it was a tonic after leaving the increasing difficult atmosphere of our former life in Johannesburg. The locals joked that the sidewalks were rolled up at 10pm. Indeed it was a quiet and safe place to settle with a family. Many of the retirees were prairie folk, who were gentle courteous people with weather beaten faces - with a not too distant memory of surviving the depression of the 1930's. I can well remember my three year old daughter racing gleefully ahead of me downtown. As I turned the corner, I witnessed the kindness of a stranger pressing a quarter into the palm of my tiny daughter's hand. It took my breath away and I was left stammering my thanks.
Tony was offered a job by an accounting firm within a week of our arrival. The 1970s were good years for employment in Canada. We wrote often to my parents in Johannesburg (I still have the stacks of letters!), and 1975 they joined us in Victoria. We settled well, and took three trips 'home' during the 70's & 80's. The city known for its magnificent hanging baskets and beautiful gardens was a wonderful new home for our family.

1990's

My parents lived a happy retirement life in Victoria. Initially after immigration, my father worked as a Travel Agent - many of his clients benefited from his extensive travel knowledge. He & my mother enjoyed many trips overseas, but were always content to call Victoria home. My father never gave up his adventuresome spirit. He revelled in the fishing opportunities that BC offered and pursued both fresh water trout fishing and salmon fishing.
My daughter graduated with a BMath from the University of Waterloo in the 1990's. She came home over the winter breaks, and we always celebrated Christmas together.
